Layla's bedroom boards

April 25, 2019

We are so lucky to count Emily Martinez from Emmy Lou Styles as a friend, fellow boss babe and a major source of inspiration.  She has created an absolutely amazing blog, where she tackles everything from fashion to friendships and make-up to motherhood.   She is literally the cutest thing ever and we cannot be more excited to watch her on this amazing journey.

So you know we were pumped when she asked us to help put together some mood boards for her daughter, Layla's, bedroom.  Emily has amazing style and she had already selected the most darling bed and mermaid bedding for Layla, so we used the bedding as a starting point for our boards.

Designing boards for kid rooms is so much fun as we get to be a little more creative and whimsical than our typical requests.  Here are the two designs that we created for Emily and where you can shop them.  We cannot wait to see what Emily selects and see these darling finds in Layla's room!

OPTION #1:

Curtains - I love these ombre pink curtains from Walmart (I know, right?!).  A great little pop of color at the bottom without being too busy or heavy.

Mirror - This full length gold mirror from Wayfair is perfect for any little girl who loves to dress up and twirl in the mirror.

Floor lamp - Target does it again with this coral-pink floor lamp that is just perfect for a little girl's room and really compliments the coral from the mermaid bedding!

Dresser - Emily indicated that she needs more dresser space and this 6-drawer dresser provides both function and style.  Totally love the textured drawers and the subtle gold pulls.

Table lamp - We tried to play off the mermaid theme again with this coral based table lamp from Pier 1.

Ombre art - The art work in this board is simple, but stunning - similar to a Rothko painting.  I think the colors are gorgeous and again compliment the other elements in the board.

Bean bag - This faux fur bean back from Pottery Barn is so adorable and a great alternative to a chair in Layla's reading nook.  I would love to curl up on one with a good book!

Round shelving - I know the book collection at our house is out of hand, so the idea of wall shelving for books is right up my alley.  This gold Crate and Barrel piece is styling and functional!

Bow hooks - The gold bow hooks are such an easy way to add both style and function in a kids room.  These would be perfect for to hang a backpack or bathrobe!

 OPTION #2

Bedding -  This adorable mermaid bedding was something Layla already had, and that's awesome, because we love it! It helped establish a theme for colors and inspired the artwork in this board.

Bed - This white bed is classic and inexpensive so you aren't married to it forever. But, the style doesn't really feel like it's attached to a specific age, so it can grow with your child.

Curtains - I just love the pom poms on these curtains, they add a but of whimsy and boho feels to the room.

Rug - We don't usually spend a ton on rugs for kids rooms, because - kids. So, this is a great option that won't break the bank, has some great colors and a vintage feel.

Side table - Simple tables that visually don't weigh down the room.

Dresser - I love old dressers that have been refininshed. If you like re-doing dressers- keep your eye out for a solid wood style and you can't go wrong with white. If you don't have time for that (who does), then check out Etsy for tons of already refinished options that are one-of-a-kind.

Lamps - Natural lamps reinforce the beach-y theme in this room and they are so cool, you'll want one for your living room too.

Flamingo print - OMG, I love this print in a XXL oversized version. Bird prints are really popular right now (everyone has seen the herons, pelicans, etc), and I love that you could use this in a kids' room or in a grown up space. I am kind of eyeing it for my dining room right now.

Mirror - A full length mirror to check out the 'twirl factor' of each dress your little beauty tries on.

Dollhouse bookcase - Double functioning as a dollhouse or a bookcase, this is a win-win and it's clean design doesn't interfere with the rest of the room's design.

Sheepskin rug - This rug is AMAZING. We have used it in another project and it's so cozy and huge.

Pink PillowFish Scale Pillow, Boho Pillow  - A few decorative pillows are the perfect pieces to reinforce the color theme established by the bedding and add to the coziness of the reading nook.

Swivel chair - Why not use an outdoor parchment swivel chair for a reading nook? It's cute and super durable.

Wall shelves - These are great accent pieces and you can change our the accessories as your kiddo's interests evolve. Maybe just put them high enough so they aren't tempted to use them as a ladder (sort of joking).
