The shredder - one step towards organization in 2020

December 24, 2019

Full disclosure, getting more organized is always top of my New Year's resolution list and it's certainly on the list again for 2020.  The feeling of contentment that comes when I am organized is a high like no other, but unfortunately, it's not one of my strongest qualities.

I recently listened to a great podcast on NPR about dealing with life's administrative tasks and I realized that I tend to procrastinate when it comes to life admin - i.e., filing paperwork, scheduling appointments, paying paper bills.  These are easy tasks, but yet I can't ever seem to stay on top of them.  Like going to the gym or eating a healthy diet, the podcast shared that the key to getting more organized is to put effective systems in place.

I recently bought some filing bins, folders and a labeling machine to organize the mounds of paperwork that was sitting in stacks on my desk and it made a world of difference.   While sifting through the paperwork, some of which was dating back 10+ years (yikes!), I realized that by throwing my "need to shred" documents into an old box, I wasn't really addressing the problem because that box would sit in my closer or garage for another ten years.  I was essentially moving it out of sight, but not out of mind.

At the end of the exercise of organizing my paperwork, I did take 2 huge boxes to my local FedEx and shredded 50lbs of documents.  I have never felt better.  Honestly, it was like a huge weight was lifted off my shoulders.

So I decided that with some of my Christmas money, I'm going to buy a shredder.  No, it's not sexy or cute, and it doesn't fit in with my office decor, but the peace of mind that comes with keeping those unnecessary documents out of my house (and out of my mind) is totally worth it.  Shredders are relatively inexpensive and you can find them just about anywhere.  Here are a few with good reviews in the event that you need to take that first step towards organization in the new year.

I'm also planning to invest in some cute desk top organizers to help me manage those documents that I need to keep at an arm's reach.  I think that having these tools in my office will certainly help me feel a bit more organized and in control.  I clearly have a long way to go to feel organized in all (ok, most) areas of my life, but I feel like this is a good start.

Happy shredding!
