You've decided to purchase a new rug. But you encounter the age old question: 5'x7' or 8'x10'? You give it your best guess only to come home with a rug that's TOTALLY wrong. So how do you choose one that's the right size for your room? Follow these simple steps to find a rug that perfectly fits your space.
We believe there is a sweet spot, not an exact formula, for choosing the right rug for each room. It looks like this:
For Living Room:
For the living room/family room, 9 times out of 10 we recommend a rug that hits about half-way beneath the larger furniture like sofas and loveseats. This helps to make the space feel bigger but still brings the furniture grouping together in a cohesive way.
For Dining Room:
A dining room rug should gently hug the dining table and chairs set. The table should be centered and chairs, when pushed in under the table, should have 12-18" of rug behind them. Too big, and the dining set will look small. Too small and the room will look unfinished.
We like to choose a rug that will tuck 2/3 to 3/4 under the bed with a good bit of rug left around the bed.
Grab your tape measure and measure the length/width of your space, then match it with the nearest standard rug size. As a reminder, here are standard rug sizes:
And when in doubt, go for a larger rug. Now get out there and find yourself one!
