An Artist’s Touch: Bringing Depth to Interior Design with Lauren Marshall

This summer, while spending time in Longboat Key, Florida, I had the joy of meeting an artist whose work and spirit completely captured my heart: Lauren Marshall. Based in nearby Siesta Key, Lauren is an acrylic-on-canvas painter whose colorful, nature-inspired pieces instantly evoke the beauty of the Gulf Coast.
As the lead designer for Olive + Opal Interiors, I’m always seeking artists whose work brings intention and warmth to the homes we create. My coffee chat with Lauren reminded me just how powerful artwork can be when it comes to curating a personal, layered, and expressive space.
Artwork as the Emotional Focal Point of a Room
When I asked Lauren what she hopes people feel when they bring home one of her pieces, her answer was simple and heartfelt:
“I hope it brings joy and lights you up every time you see it. I hope it absolutely takes your breath away from the moment you see it… it should feel like the cherry on top of your interior design.”
This philosophy echoes what we believe at Olive + Opal—that great design isn’t just about style, it’s about soul. Artwork becomes the element that ties the space together, reflects your story, and creates connection.
Collaborating with Designers to Create Purposeful Pieces
Lauren loves working with interior designers to create custom artwork that fits seamlessly into a space. Whether it’s matching a color palette, choosing the perfect size and frame, or helping a piece feel like it was always meant to be there, she welcomes the collaborative spirit.
“Interior designers are like interpreters,” she says. “They help make sure the artwork looks thoughtfully chosen and is a focal point instead of an afterthought.”
If you’re unsure where to start with art, Lauren encourages you to follow your gut. If a piece makes you smile, don’t overthink it—it’s often easier to match pillows and accessories later than to find artwork that truly speaks to you.
Behind the Brush: Lauren’s Inspiration and Conservation Mission
Lauren’s love of nature is at the heart of everything she creates. Her best ideas come from time spent outdoors, both from her Kansas childhood and her family’s life now along Florida’s coast.
Her paintings aren’t just beautiful—they tell a story and serve a greater purpose. After witnessing the devastating Red Tide in Sarasota in 2018, Lauren became deeply involved in local conservation efforts. Her upcoming solo show at Big Waters Land Trust will raise funds for coastal preservation through her artwork.
“I hope my paintings are a daily reminder of why we want to save these wild, beautiful places,” she shares.
Thinking About Adding Art to Your Space?
Whether you’re a longtime collector or someone who’s never thought of themselves as “an art person,” Lauren has this advice:
“Something has to go on your walls—it might as well be something that makes your day better.”
Art doesn’t have to be intimidating. It can reflect your family’s journey, honor your roots, or inspire where you’re headed next. It’s one of the most powerful ways to turn a house into a home.
